Interview | Jenny Williams & Neon Folk

Lo que comenzó como un grupo de amigos que se juntaban a zapar y tomar mate, rápidamente evolucionó a una banda de covers y uno de los actos must see de Buenos Aires. Nos referimos a Jenny Williams & Neon Folk. La banda esta formada por Jenny Williams, claramente, Joaquin Finco de Heroína Shock y Juan Primavera. Los distintos talentos que cada uno aporta al grupo se evidencian en los covers reversionados, de los que se apropian por completo, haciéndolos suyos.

Jenny es una actriz reconocida actualmente por su papel como Sofia, en la exitosa serie “Graduados” de Telefe. Además de dedicarse a la actuación y la música, Jenny es modelo y la ultima “it” girl de Buenos Aires.

Hace poco tuvimos la oportunidad de charlar con ella para conocer un poco más sobre su nueva banda, sus inspiraciones musicales y su próximo show en Bajo Tribuna, el 11 de Octubre a las 21 hs.

What started off as a group of friends hanging out, jamming, and drinking mate quickly evolved to a 3-piece cover band and one of Buenos Aires’s must see acts, otherwise known as Jenny Williams & Neon Folk. The band is made up by Jenny Williams (of course), Joaquin Finco of Heroína Shock, and Juan Primavera. The different talents each brings to the group is apparent in the re-imagined covers that they make all their own.

Recently we had the chance to chat with Jenny in order to find out a little more about her musical inspirations, the story behind her new band, and their upcoming performance in Bajo Tribuna on Thursday October 11th at 9pm.

¿Cuál es la historia detrás de Jenny Williams & Neon Folk?

En realidad surgió como un grupo de amigos que empezamos tocando, más que nada, para divertirnos entre nosotros, para juntarnos a tomar mate y a tocar y a zapar un rato y a partir de ahí en realidad empezaron a surgir propuestas para tocar en distintos eventos. Como estoy en Graduados que es un programa de Telefe muy visto de repente les pareció a muchas personas interesante aparte que yo también haga música, así que no fue algo muy planificado. Fue más bien espontáneo todo el proceso de la banda y una cosa llevó a la otra y ahora de repente somos como una banda consolidada. Si bien no tenemos temas propios, tocamos solo covers, ensayamos todas las semanas, tenemos presentaciones constantemente, estamos muy involucrados con el desarrollo de cada uno de los temas. Reversionamos todas las canciones que tocamos, no las tocamos tal cual son, así que nada, hay un proceso creativo de todo dentro lo que es el repertorio.

What’s the story behind Jenny Williams & Neon Folk?

Actually it all started as a group of friends that started to play, more than anything, to have fun among ourselves, to get together to drink mate, and play and jam for a bit and from there offers started to arise for us to play at different events. Since I’m in Graduados, a highly watched television program on Telefe, all of a sudden lots of people thought it would interesting if I also did music, so it wasn’t something very planned out. Everything with the band was quite spontaneous, and one thing lead to another and now all of a sudden we are a proper band. Although we don’t have our own original songs, we only play covers, we rehearse every week, we constantly have shows, and we are very involved in the development of every song. We re-imagine all the songs we play, we don’t play them as is, so you know there is a creative process all within the repertoire.

¿Cómo describirías con tus palabras la música que hacen?

Hacemos covers de los 70s, 80s, 90s reversionados. Temas que han sido grandes hits o quizás no tanto pero la intensión es que la gente cuando los escuche diga “Uh! qué bueno éste tema! Hace cuanto que no lo escuchaba y como marco un momento en mi vida!” Temas que realmente tengan algún tipo de peso emocional, en nosotros que los interpretamos, o en gente que los escucha. No sé, por ejemplo ahora está muy de moda Adele, y la admiro muchísimo como cantante pero no me interesa escuchar música, en este momento de mi vida, que sea netamente desde un lado comercial, o que sean temas que de por sí son famosos y entonces funcionan, como que me interesa tocar temas en la banda que tengan que ver con algún aspecto emocional mío, que toquen algún botón internamente para que a la hora de interpretarlos, yo pueda transmitir algo más. O sea que en definitiva son temas que de algún modo u otro, también marcaron mi vida.

In your own words how would you describe the music you make?

We make play re-imagined covers of songs from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Songs that have been big hits or maybe not so much, but the the intention is that when people hear them they say “oh what a great song! I haven’t heard this in so long and how it marked a time in my life!” Songs that really have some type of emotional weight, for us who interpret them, and the people who listen to them. I don’t know, for example now Adele is really in, and I admire her a lot as a singer but I’m not really interested in listening to music, at this moment in my life, that is purely from a commercial side, or songs that are in and of themselves famous, as I like to play songs in the band that have some emotion aspect to me, that touch an internal button so when the time comes to play them, I can convey something more. So in the end they are songs that somehow or another, also impacted my life.

¿Qué bandas y/o artistas son tus mayores referentes musicales?

Escucho un poco de todo, pero me gusta mucho Stevie Wonder. Acá en Argentina me gusta mucho Illya Kuryaki & The Valderramas. Me gusta mucho Chuck Berry. Me gusta el blues mucho así que me gusta John Mayer, Alicia Keyes, me gusta… que se yo, me gusta un poco de todo en realidad, no hay música que no me guste, en realidad mi formación musical tiene más que ver con la comedia musical pero escucho de todo y en mi vida fui tomando de todo algo distinto.

What bands and/or artists are your biggest musical influences?

I listen to a little bit of everything, but I like Stevie Wonder a lot. Here in Argentina, I really like Illya Kuryaki & The Valderramas. I like Chuck Berry a lot. I really like blues, so I like John Mayer, Alicia Keyes, I like…who knows I actually like a little bit of everything. There isn’t music that I don’t like. My musical training is actually in musical comedy, but I listen to everything and throughout my life I’ve taken inspiration from many different places.

Además de tener tu propia banda, también sos una actriz y modelo. ¿Cuál es tu mayor pasión?

Definamente mi mayor pasión es la actuación, yo soy actriz que aparte tiene su banda, que aparte a veces hace trabajos como modelo pero definamente mi mayor pasión en la vida siempre es la actuación. De todos modos como me copado antes como yo arranque comedia musical tanto cantar como bailar me significan grandes recursos de expresión, me siento tan cómoda tanto actuando como cantando como bailando, actuando, pero bueno, la carrera que elegí tomar es la actuación.

Besides having your own band, you are also an actress and model. Which is your greatest passion?

My greatest passion is definitely acting, I’m an actress that also has a band, and that occasionally does modeling work, but my greatest passion in life has definitely always been acting. In any case, as I studied musical comedy, acting and singing are big sources of expression for me, and I feel as comfortable acting as I do singing and dancing, but acting is the career that I chose.

¿Qué preparan para el show del jueves en Bajo Tribuna? ¿Nos podes adelantar algo?

Vamos a tocar 10 temas, covers, todas reversionadas las canciones, y es una batería, un bajo, 3 guitarras, y por momentos en algunos temas el ukelele y una voz. Son todos temas que van para arriba, digo son todos temas con buen tempo, no son baladas, son mas bien todos folks, bluces. Hay covers de Bob Dylan, Bon Jovi, entre otros.

We do you have prepared for Thursday’s show in Bajo Tribuna. Can you give us a little preview?

We are going to play 10 songs, covers, the songs are all re-done, and there are drums, bass, 3 guitars, in some songs a ukelele, and my voice. All the songs are upbeat, all songs with a good tempo, they’re not ballads, they’re rather all folk and blues songs. There are covers of Bob Dylan and Bon Jovi, among others.

¿Qué sigue para la banda?

Mira por ahora estamos con presentaciones de acá hasta a fin de año, ahora en Bajo Tribuna, tenemos ya reservada un par de fechas en el interior, y en algunas bares también todo acá siempre por Buenos Aires. Y la verdad es que como el proyecto arrancó un poco de forma medio espontánea, lo estamos viviendo también un poco así. Nos llegan propuestas, las evaluamos y si nos gustan las hacemos. Nosotros somos todos músicos de vocación, pero también tenemos todos nuestros trabajos o sea que también es como cuestión siempre de organizarse con los tiempos, así que en la medida que van surgiendo las propuestas las vamos evaluando y no tenemos nada demasiado programado más que lo próximo, que es ésta fecha, un par de fechas más hasta fin de año y bueno, después ver como queremos plantearnos nosotros para el año que viene.

What’s next for the band?

We have shows planned from now until the end of the year, now in Bajo Tribuna, we already have a couple of dates reserved in the interior, and in some bars as well here in Buenos Aires. The truth is the project started kind of spontaneously, and that’s also how we are living. We get proposals, we evaluated them, and if we like them we do it. We are all musicians by calling, but we also all have our own jobs. I mean it’s also a question of being able to fit it into our schedules, so we evaluate the proposals as they arise. We don’t have any other dates planned, besides the next one [in Bajo Tribuna], a couple more dates before the end of the year, and then we’ll ask ourselves how we want to move forward next year.
